We can fight about Orientalism in Western Classical music another time.
Growing up I went to the Nutcracker every year because my sister was a dancer. I was always totally enraptured. I memorized the music. This one is one of my favourite dances.
The Nutcracker, Op. 71a: XIIIb. Character Dances - Coffee (Arabic Dance): Commodo.
Bonn Classical Philharmonic, Heribert Beissel.
Hindemith. Sonata for Viola and Piano Op. 11 no. 4 (1919).
I like this piece because it really doesn’t sound “Hindemith”y. Not that I mind Hindemith, he’s still pretty cool, but it’s easy for his later works to start all sounding the same to me. At no point does this one do that. Take a listen!
Performing this business on Sunday y’all.
Orff. Carmina Burana III. Veris Leta Facies.
Tchaikovsky killed himself nine days after conducting the premiere of this, his 6th Symphony. It might be the bleakest finale I’ve ever heard.

And the award for best album artwork goes to…
If I could start over again, I would pick oboe, just to switch to English horn later, for this melody.
Dvorak. Symphony No. 9 “From the New World”. II. Largo.
Weiner Philharmoniker, Herbert von Karajan.
